What Is Teeth Straightening?
Teeth straightening uses carefully controlled forces to move teeth into better positions. It can correct crowding, close spaces and improve how your upper and lower teeth meet.
Getting tooth position right can make several other things easier. Teeth may become easier to clean, your smile more balanced and, in some cases, speech and biting more comfortable. If you are considering composite bonding or veneers, straightening first can reduce the amount of restorative treatment or tooth preparation needed.
Uneven tooth contacts can also contribute to localised wear or damage. We assess these contacts as part of your treatment planning. Grinding has several possible causes, however, so straightening is not presented as a cure for it.

Teeth Straightening At Start Smiling, What Makes Us Different?
We begin with diagnosis. Clinical photographs, optical 3D scans and appropriate digital X-rays allow us to assess your teeth, bite and supporting tissues. Where a specific clinical need justifies it, 3D X-ray imaging provides further information.
This helps us plan more than alignment alone. We consider tooth proportions, gum health, bite contacts and the relationship between straightening and any proposed whitening, bonding or veneers.
Our experience with different aligner brands and fixed-brace techniques means we can select the approach that suits the case. In some situations, a hybrid plan uses fixed braces for particular movements and aligners for another stage of treatment.

What Teeth Straightening Options Are Available?
Removable Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are thin, custom-made trays that fit closely over your teeth. A planned sequence gradually moves them towards their intended positions.
They are discreet and can be removed for eating and cleaning. They must be worn according to the prescribed schedule, and small tooth-coloured attachments may be needed to help control movement.
Hidden Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are fixed to the inner surfaces of the teeth, making them largely hidden when you smile.
They may suit patients who want a discreet fixed option. We’ll assess whether they are appropriate and explain the adjustment period, cleaning requirements and possible temporary effects on speech.
Discreet Fixed Braces
Fixed braces attach to the front surfaces of the teeth and allow controlled movement throughout treatment. We use discreet clear brackets with tooth-coloured or white-coated wires where appropriate.
They can be particularly useful when a case needs movements or bite correction better managed with fixed appliances.
Hybrid Treatment
Some patients benefit from a combination of fixed braces and clear aligners at different stages. This allows us to use the advantages of each technique within one personalised plan.
