What Are Veneers?
Veneers are thin restorations bonded to the front surfaces of teeth to improve their shape, colour and proportions. They can repair chipped edges, enhance worn or undersized teeth, close suitable spaces and create a more balanced smile.
At Start Smiling, we plan veneers around your face, your bite and the health of your teeth. Digital photographs and optical scans help us design the proposed changes, while a trial smile allows you to explore the shapes before committing to treatment.
Preserving healthy tooth structure is central to our approach. Suitable cases can be treated additively, without drilling the natural teeth. Where preparation is necessary, it is carefully planned and limited to what the individual tooth needs. Straightening first can sometimes make a more conservative veneer treatment possible.
Porcelain vs Composite Veneers, What’s The Difference?
Both materials can create exceptionally natural results. The right choice depends on your teeth, bite, desired appearance and budget—as well as the craftsmanship involved.
Porcelain VeneersPorcelain veneers are individually crafted in a dental laboratory and bonded to your teeth. They offer excellent colour stability and allow intricate reproduction of natural translucency, texture and light reflection.
For demanding aesthetic cases, we work with specialist laboratories and master ceramists with whom we have relationships spanning more than 15 years. This close collaboration allows us to refine the fine details of your smile, from subtle characterisation to the shape of each tooth.
Porcelain may be particularly suitable when you want durable surface polish and detailed control of appearance. Whether any tooth preparation is needed depends on your individual case.
Composite VeneersComposite veneers use tooth-coloured resin to build and reshape the visible surfaces of your teeth. They can be placed directly, using artistic layering or a digitally guided SmileFast approach.
Tom is a co-inventor and co-owner of SmileFast, while Tony mentors other dentists within its clinical team. Their experience allows them to combine precise planning with careful shaping, characterisation and polishing.
Composite offers a more accessible price point and can often be repaired or refreshed. It generally needs more maintenance of its surface finish than porcelain, but skilled treatment can produce a highly convincing natural appearance.
